The Recession Speical

Old Tyme Folk Punk with a side of Squat Club Swing, served on the street at the back of the breadline with a theatrical flare, a political edge, and brimming with humor.
The Recession Special formed in quarantine during the summer of 2020. Dusty The Kid (guitar/banjo) and "Bucky-Eyed" Geoffrey Taylor (fiddle) started busking together in downtown Missoula, MT in the wake of the collapse of the live music industry.
Soon joined by Finn "Stovepipe" Carroll on bass and Thrift Storrs Bishop on washboard, the group began to amass a small following of tramps, local characters, and college students hungry for the return of live music.
Taking their name from the Old Post Pub's once fabled menu item for the down-and-out, the band seeks to bring the spirit of resistance and resilience back to folk music, and to remind listeners that no matter how hard times get, there's always a place for dancing in the revolution.

Drawing inspiration from the sound of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's Hot Club band, NBJ features the angelic voice of Whitni Kent, Geoffrey Taylor's fiddling, and John Rosett's mandolin.  Jon, John and Jasper lay down la pomp.

Recorded Live at the Longstaff House, in Missoula Montana in February 2020. This concert was a fundraise for the Big Sky Django Jazz festival that was coming up in March, however everything got postponed... Gregory Hayes joins us on guitar.

Solo Geoff

Layers and textures lay the foundations for improvised melodies. Recorded in a basement in Missoula with the mic in the mac.
Recorded in 2011 in front of a live audience, these improvisations explore the fantastic acoustics of the Billings Depot with a single violin.

"The Billings Depot was built in 1909 for use by three railroad companies: Northern Pacific, Great Northern, and Chicago, Burlington and Quincy. Designed in the Beaux Arts Eclectic style, the four original buildings included the main depot building, railroad lunch room, postal building and an office building. The depot building was designed by the Northern Pacific Railroad’s chief engineer and featured a spacious waiting area for 200 passengers, a gentlemen’s smoking room, a ladies’ waiting room, a baggage area and service offices. These buildings are the center of Billings’ town site district, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978."

Recorded in 2012, part two of this series featured cross-tuned violins and violas. Each improvisation features a different tuning to explore.
